Unsworth Makes Surprise Call To Fellow Cup Winner Temple

Everton Under-23s manager David Unsworth has been doing his bit for the Club’s Blue Family by making phone calls to supporters - and earlier this week he made contact with a fellow Toffees FA Cup winner.

Unsworth, who of course won the cup with Everton in 1995, rang 1966 goalscoring hero Derek Temple. Temple netted the winner in the Blues’ dramatic 3-2 cup final victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley that year.

“Derek is just such a lovely man, so humble, and I had a really nice chat with him,” Unsworth told evertonfc.com.

“He’s a legend to our supporters but you’d never know it from speaking to him because he’s so down to earth.

“It was great to hear that he’s doing well and he clearly still loves the Blues.”

Temple, 81, was thrilled to get the surprise call from the former Everton defender.

“It was lovely of Dave, very kind of him to check up on us,” he said.

“We had a chat about football and, of course, the current situation and I just hope it won’t be too long until we’re all back at Goodison Park again.”

Unsworth spoke of his pride in playing his part in Everton’s Blue Family initiative, a coordinated outreach campaign to assist the most at-risk members of the community in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

"I was asked to get involved in the phone calls and it's been terrific,” he added.

“It's so rewarding and it's actually quite humbling that people are so pleased to get a call.

“Everton is just one big family and when times are tough, families look out for each other."
