Davies 'Privileged' To Be Part Of Everton 'Community'

Tom Davies says he feels “privileged” to play for a club with Everton's community spirit – and the Blue Family ethos is reflected in the Toffees' dressing room.

Midfielder Davies graduated through the Club’s Academy and has played 112 first-team games before his 22nd birthday.

But in common with fellow Premier League footballers, his job is on hold and Davies is adapting to an unfamiliar routine away from Everton.

The Blues’ USM Finch Farm training base was closed six weeks ago and top-flight football is suspended indefinitely.

Davies has implemented a structure into his days and admits remaining in contact with friends and teammates is aiding his wellbeing during a period when social contact is at a premium.

And the Englishman is encouraged mental health is an issue footballers are comfortable discussing among themselves and in public.

“I am an open person and the group we have at Everton is so good,” Davies told evertonfc.com.

“The senior players are there to talk to about anything, I can talk to them about football or anything that is bothering me.

“Everton is such a community and in the team we have that same feeling – everyone is together and we can talk about most things.

“I am privileged to be part of that and in such a good position.

“It is getting a lot better [people in football feeling confident talking about mental health].

“Perhaps in the past people were not aware of how big an issue it was but they didn’t have access to the knowledge we have.

“There are so many platforms you can reach out to.

“There are three or four lads in the team I can speak to and other things provided by the FA and the Club.

“It [talking candidly] is not portrayed as a bad thing, we all have mental health, whether it is good or bad.”

Davies started Everton's two most recent games, against Manchester United and Chelsea, and has figured 21 times in the Premier League this season.

The England Under-21 player concedes settling into a new rhythm presented a challenge after football was halted last month.

But after devising a daily pattern he is using the opportunity to discover more about himself while living in this uncharted territory.

SANSOM AND BRANCH ON EVERTON'S SUPPORT FOR HOMELESS

Former Blues discuss power of Everton in the Community's Home Is Where The Heart Is initiative.

“Getting into a routine was the hardest part,” said Davies.

“The first few days I was sleeping in, then going to the gym after waking up.

“I had no structure to my day.

“Now I have established a routine. I’ll wake up, do some gym and have my breakfast, do some things around the house and go back in the gym later.

“It has been strange not waking up at a certain time to go training.

“But it is interesting trying to get yourself in a structure where you can do things throughout the day, doing everything yourself without being at training.

“I am around 20 lads every day and part of that team mentality of doing things together.

“You don’t do much on your own and are around people all the time, training or in the gym or physio room.

“It is different being in the house on my own but it is an opportunity to learn about myself.

“And when this is all over we will appreciate things we previously took for granted.”
