Gomes On Missing Everton But Need To Respect Rules

Andre Gomes admits he is missing Everton, his teammates and Blues fans but urged people to “respect” social distancing rules to help protect the most vulnerable individuals and get through this “tough moment”.

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, the Government has instructed that people should leave their homes for only food, health reasons and work (when they cannot do so from home) to help limit the spread of the disease.

One outdoor form of exercise a day either alone or with people in the same household is also permitted.

Speaking in an Instagram Q&A with supporters, Gomes underlined that health must be the number one priority.

“I am missing my teammates and the Club and, of course, the first thing I want to do after the quarantine is to go back to the training ground,” Gomes said.

“At Everton, we have a really nice dressing room environment. I have a lot of friends and we usually spend a lot of time together.

“The fans have always been so amazing with me, too.

“It is a tough moment and we must all try to respect the rules.

“Enjoy movies, TV series, do exercise when you can. Help yourself and others.”

Gomes also paid tribute to the leadership of Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti.

The Italian has been a keen supporter Everton’s Blue Family campaign, which is providing assistance to at-risk and socially isolated individuals during the pandemic.

Last week, he called 52-year-old Evertonian Mark, who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease 12 months ago and is self-isolating as a precaution against the virus.

Gomes praised Ancelotti’s warmth and humility and detailed why - when it is safe for football to resume - he believes the former AC Milan boss will help drive Everton forward.

“Carlo is a great human being,” Gomes said. “He is a really nice guy.

“He has great experience and he is helping the team a lot.

“Everton is doing a massive effort to make the team better.

“I believe Carlo trusts in the Club, otherwise he wouldn’t have come here.

“We want to make the fans proud and we are on the right way to do that. The fans are with us all the time.

“We are trying to be better and improve the Club.

“We want to reach a high a level. We all love Everton and right now I think we are on a good track to reach our goal.”

Everton’s final home game before the Premier League was suspended was a 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Goodison Park on 1 March.

The match was Gomes’ first at the Grand Old Lady since recovering from ankle surgery.

He revealed the rousing ovation he was afforded by supporters before kick-off is his most cherished memory so far at Everton.

“I have had many really good moments at Goodison but I have to say this one [was the most special],” he said.

“It was such a warm welcome. The fans have always been incredible with me.

“Hearing this [reception], I felt really confident and happy to have the support from them.”

Gomes also answered some light-hearted questions during the Instagram Q&A.

Asked whether he was a better dancer than Yerry Mina, he replied: “I’m really bad but Yerry is a disaster!

“Sometimes if we stop to get some water in a training session, he will stop to dance while we are drinking water! He is always happy, laughing and smiling.”

Another Evertonian enquired as to whether Gomes would be following Richarlison’s lead in getting a Ronaldo-inspired haircut…

“No, no, no!” Gomes replied. “I am not confident about doing that. If I did, I would have to be in quarantine for life!”

Blue Family has also seen the Club and charity introduce a referral form enabling fans and the wider public to refer people they believe might need a friendly voice to speak to at this difficult time.
