Coleman Outlines Why Everton Players Are Relishing Ancelotti Reign

Seamus Coleman says Saturday’s draw with West Ham United provides a springboard for Everton to “continue climbing” under “proven winner” Carlo Ancelotti.

Coleman was restored to Everton’s team at London Stadium after coming off the bench in the previous week’s home victory over Brighton & Hove Albion.

Everton are back at Goodison Park to face Newcastle United on Tuesday, when Coleman insists victory would lend positive context to the weekend draw against West Ham.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s equaliser 60 seconds before the break banked the Blues’ point, although Everton were more progressive after half-time – and Ancelotti’s introduction of teenage Premier League debutant Anthony Gordon.

Coleman’s fellow right sider Djibril Sidibe, who started 13 of Everton’s previous 14 league games, came on soon after the restart to inject additional thrust into his side’s football following a first-half display manager Ancelotti felt was short on intensity.

“We came here wanting to win but were off the pace in the first half and West Ham were the better team, which was disappointing for us – but the positive is we came out with a point and earlier in the season we might have gone for it and ended up losing the game,” Coleman told evertontv.

“We have a home game next and if we get three points from that match we keep climbing.

“It will be a great point [from West Ham] if we can get all three on Tuesday.

WATCH: WEST HAM UNITED 1-1 EVERTON

Highlights of Blues' Hammers draw.

“Confidence is high at the minute.

“The manager has been great

“He carries the personality of a manager who has been so successful in the game

“But you can see the human side to him, as well.

“As a person he has been different class.

“We should be very excited to have a manager like this in charge.

“Players, supporters, we all back this – even if we have some sticky spells, we back it because he is a proven winner and that is what this club needs.”

Coleman has started three of Ancleotti’s five Premier League matches in charge. He occupied an orthodox right-back position at the weekend but had previously been used by the Italian as one of three centre-halves, releasing France international Sidibe to operate higher up the field.

The 31-year-old was identified as a key figure by Ancelotti when the former AC Milan and Real Madrid boss was officially unveiled last month.

But Coleman insists there has been no conversation between player and manager over the Irishman’s senior standing.

“Regardless of the manager, I know the difference between right and wrong,” said Coleman

“I know the responsibilities and the standards the lads need to have around the place.

“You can’t babysit people but you try to push them in the right direction on a daily basis.

“We are excited we have a top manager in charge and I am sure he can crack the whip when he needs to.”

GORDON REFLECTS ON THE BEST DAY OF HIS LIFE SO FAR

Everton forward savours Premier League debut.

On his unfamiliar centre-back assignment, Coleman continued: “It is something I probably wasn’t expecting but I did enjoy it.

“It is about trying to get Sidibe on the ball higher up the pitch.

“I just work hard every day at Finch Farm. like I have since I came over in 2009; 100 per cent every day and on a Saturday you just want the team to do well.

“I thought Djibril came on and made a difference [against West Ham]..

“I got the ball and fed him a few times because we understand the quality he has in that position.

“I want to play every week but the bigger picture for me is Everton Football Club.

“We are all battling and he manager has rotated quite a bit

“When Sidibe plays I am fully supportive and want him to do well.

“In football there are always battles for positions but we’ve shown we can play together, too.”

Teenage forward Gordon is the latest talent to emerge from Everton Academy’s fertile production line.

The 18-year-old made his senior Goodison debut against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup in December – his second first-team outing arriving two years after his first following Gordon’s involvement as a 16-year-old in a Europa League meeting with Apollon Limassol.

CALVERT-LEWIN WANTS MORE FROM EVERTON

Striker's goal of campaign earned point from London Stadium visit.

He took another step in the right direction with a bright 45-minute showing in the capital on his first league appearance.

“Anthony is a very good player but I don’t want to put too much pressure on him,” added Coleman.

“I have been very impressed in training.

“The manager’s not put him out there because he’s a young lad and we’re down on numbers.

“He’s put him out there because of what he’s seen on the training ground,

“Anthony needs to keep working hard every day.

“You are not just given a career, you have to work for it.

“From what I have seen he has the attributes to do that.

“If he keeps grounded and working hard the ability is there without a shadow of a doubt.

“I have spoken to him a few times and he seems a good family lad, which is always important.

“This is a first step of hopefully a very good career for him.

“But you have to work every single day."
