Carlo Ancelotti is confident “fantastic striker” Dominic Calvert-Lewin can become a potent all-round centre-forward for Everton as he pinpointed the areas the in-form 22-year-old can further progess his game.

Calvert-Lewin was Everton’s match-winner as the Blues saw off Burnley 1-0 in Ancelotti’s first game as manager.

The Englishman’s precision header 10 minutes from time earned a deserved victory for Everton and represented his eighth goal of the season - and third strike in his past four Premier League matches.

Ancelotti revealed his eagerness to work with Calvert-Lewin on the training ground to help the talented attacker fulfil his significant potential.

“He is a fantastic striker in my opinion,” Ancelotti said.

“He is strong with his head but he can improve is his movement without the ball.

“He has to be more focussed on the goal but, of course, he is really unselfish and he moves up and down, right and left.

“He has to stay, in my opinion, more focussed on the centre of the box.”

Calvert-Lewin’s late goal was just reward for Everton, who were dominant for large spells of the match. The Blues enjoyed almost 70 per cent possession and fired in 22 shots – the away side had just six efforts on goal.

Everton are now unbeaten in their past four Premier League matches, with the Blues having taken eight points from games against Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Burnley.

Ancelotti saluted the collective desire and application of his team and urged the Blues to channel their competitive fire into another winning performance at Newcastle United on Saturday (3pm).

“The spirit of the team, I have really enjoyed," Ancelotti said.

“Everton is a family.

“I saw the spirit of the players in the game against Burnley and in the training sessions.

“We have to keep the same spirit [against Newcastle].

“[In future games] We want to be more efficient, to give good passes, to make good choices.

“We missed some counter-attacks where we could be more dangerous, but they were the only details where we have to improve.

“For everyone it was important to win, for the Club, the players for the supporters. We want the points to move up the table.”

Ancelotti was afforded a rousing ovation by the Goodison faithful before taking his place in the dugout for the first time as Everton manager at the Grand Old Lady.

“It was really special that moment,” he added.

“The people gave to me fantastic support at the beginning of the game. I say thank you to them."

With only a short period before his team return to action at St James’ Park, Ancelotti said he will likely make changes to his starting XI for Saturday’s game.

“Of course, I have to change players and try to put more players fresh if possible,” said the Blues boss, who added Everton have no new injury concerns ahead of the match.

“We are an energetic team. Physically, we are in really good condition, so we look forward to the next game.

“We don’t have really time to recover but we are going to check the players that were not able to play [on Boxing Day] - maybe they have more possibility to play against Newcastle.

“We have to see how the players recover. I am going to decide on the line-up on the day of the game.”
