Coleman: Blues Learning From 'The Best' In Boss Ancelotti

Seamus Coleman says Everton's players must "soak up" all they can from one of world football's most decorated managers in Carlo Ancelotti and use victory in his first game in charge as a launchpad for a successful second half of the season.

Ancelotti had little more than 72 hours to prepare his side for the Boxing Day visit of Burnley after only holding his first training session on Monday afternoon but steered them to a 1-0 win courtesy of Dominic Calvert-Lewin's late diving header.

Calvert-Lewin's eighth goal of the season came via a cross from makeshift winger Djibril Sidibe, the Frenchman having been pushed forward in a system that saw the Blues switch from 4-4-2 to 3-5-2 when in possession.

That alteration saw Coleman drop into a central back three with Mason Holgate and Yerry Mina during Everton attacks and the skipper praised the way Ancelotti was able to implement the shift despite his minimal time with the team on the training pitch.

"He's a manager who when he speaks, you listen," said Coleman.

"When he walks into a room, you perk up. He's made a few tweaks and I think our performance today deserved the three points.

"Me, as a player, I listen and learn from every manager and respect them wholeheartedly but a manager with his track record, what he's done in the game, as a club we should be very proud, we should embrace it as players, soak it all up and learn from the best. And hopefully this can really kick us on."

On the tactical change and the impact it had on him personally, Coleman added: "I enjoyed it. It was something the manager worked on during the week - when we have the ball to drop into a back three.

"I was happy to do it, we did it for a few days in training and I really enjoyed it actually."

HIGHLIGHTS: EVERTON 1-0 BURNLEY

Calvert-Lewin headers gives Ancelotti win in first game as manager.

Despite creating myriad chances - Everton had 21 shots on goal to Burnley's six - the home side looked in danger of being frustrated by an obdurate and resolute Clarets backline until Calvert-Lewin flung himself to glance a header in off goalkeeper Nick Pope's post with 10 minutes remaining.

At the other end, Burnley were denied even a single shot on target as Everton kept a second successive clean sheet following Saturday's stalemate with Arsenal.

The Blues are now unbeaten in the league in four games since Duncan Ferguson took temporary charge against Chelsea on 7 December and Coleman believes the feelgood factor restored by the Scot during his caretaker stint is to thank for driving Everton's upturn in form.

Boxing Day's success moves the Toffees up to 13th position in the Premier League table, within three points of the top half and seven of fifth. They next face Newcastle United at St James' Park on Saturday.

"The atmosphere was great today and I think we have to thank Duncan for that as well," said Coleman. "He got the spirit back a little bit after a disappointing start to the season.

"He lifted the place, lifted the crowd and then, obviously, when the crowd are feeling good and they see Carlo Ancelotti coming out today it's a massive boost and it was set up for us to win today.

"But we still had to go out and do it and Burnley are a good side and doing well for themselves.

"But I think momentum's been building from the few games that Duncan had, so we'll rest up, get ready to go again and hopefully it will be another three points [at Newcastle] and we can keep climbing that table."
