Ferguson's Tribute To 'Incredible Human Being' Coleman

Duncan Ferguson says the “incredibly loyal and hard-working” Seamus Coleman is “one of the reasons I love coming to work every day”.

Full-back Coleman returned significantly ahead of schedule to make his 300th Everton appearance in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Manchester United after cracking ribs last month.

The Irishman has featured in 10 Premier League games this season and was in typically combative form as he stepped in for under-the-weather Djibril Sidibe at the weekend.

Coleman is closing on his 11th anniversary with the club he joined from Sligo Rovers in January 2009.

And caretaker manager Ferguson, an Everton favourite in his own right, admits it isn’t only Coleman’s teammates who turn to the 31-year-old for inspiration.

“I look to him as well, he has that much experience and we can all learn from him,” Ferguson told evertontv.

“We all look to Seamus to set the best example.

“Seamus Coleman makes me a better Evertonian.

“He is incredible for the Football Club.

“He has been taking injections to try to play and is always trying to make himself available.

“He is a proper Evertonian.

“He is an incredible servant to the Club and him being such a great Evertonian, we need to make sure we harness that.

“I love Seamus and one of the reasons I love coming to work is to see guys like Seamus Coleman.”

Coleman established himself as Everton’s first-choice right-back in his second full campaign at the Club in 2010/11.

The 31-year-old recovered from a serious leg injury sustained playing for Ireland in March 2017 to reclaim his starting spot at the beginning of the follow year.

DEPARTING MAIER & SEVECKE THANK BLUES

Defender duo Leonie Maier and Rikke Sevecke reflect on their final Everton match as the pair are set to depart the Club this summer.

Coleman played 30 times in all competitions last season and was appointed Club captain on the eve of this campaign.

Ferguson has had a front-row view of Coleman’s influence on Everton since joining the Blues’ first-team coaching staff in February 2014.

““Seamus is incredibly loyal and incredibly hard working,” continued Ferguson.

“You know he has your back and that is the most important thing for me.

“Seamus is a tremendous individual and a tremendous Evertonian.

“I hope he stays at this club for a very long time.

“The amount of work he does behind the scenes is incredible and he is the type of guy this club cannot lose.

“He is a great leader and an incredible human being.

“I have tremendous love and respect for Seamus.”

HIGHLIGHTS: MANCHESTER UNITED 1-1 EVERTON

Resilient Toffees battle out point at Old Trafford.

Coleman’s stated ambition is to win silverware with Everton and the Blues can take one step closer to Wembley when they host Leicester City in a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie on Wednesday.

The League Cup represents the lone domestic omission from the Blues’ trophy cabinet and the Club has reached the last four only twice in 31 years.

Ferguson shares his defender’s ambition to return tangible success to Goodison Park.

But the Scot is acutely aware of the challenge presented by a Leicester side flying high in the Premier League and coming to L4 aiming to extend their unbeaten run to an 11th match.

“I think this is our most difficult fixture [of his caretaker reign to date],” added Ferguson.

“Leicester are one of the best teams in the league and this is going to be a big ask for us… our biggest test.

“Leicester have a lot of good players, a lot of young players.

“They are really building something there.

“It’s been far, far too long [without silverware] for our club, but we’ve got a chance to reach a semi-final, we’ve not been to many semi-finals in this competition before, we’ve never won this cup.

“So, we’re not looking too far ahead but we’re desperate to get to this semi-final.

“I’m very aware this could be the last chance to get silverware for some of the senior players, so I’m desperate for them.”
