Duncan Ferguson has revealed he was wearing a watch belonging to the great Howard Kendall during Saturday's stirring 3-1 victory over Chelsea.
The watch worn by the Blues' most successful ever manager was given to Ferguson ahead of kick off at Goodison Park by Kendall's widow, Lily.
It proved to bring Ferguson good fortune for his first game in temporary charge as Everton produced a display steeped in heart, desire and determination to earn a win that moved them up to 14th in the Premier League table.
The Blues went ahead early through Richarlison's Ferguson-esque header before Dominic Calvert-Lewin struck twice at the Howard Kendall Gwladys Street end after the break to ensure a long-range effort from Chelsea's Mateo Kovacic was nothing but a consolation.
Ferguson, who played during Kendall’s third spell in charge of Everton from June 1997 to April 1998, saluted all four sides of Goodison at the final whistle, revealing his trademark wristband on one arm and the watch on the other.
“It [the watch] is Howard Kendall’s," he explained afterwards. "Lily gave it to my wife this morning and said she wanted me to wear it on the bench for Howard.
"I loved him. It was very emotional. It does nae work. But there you go, it’s nice. It’s an amazing feeling, really.
"To get the result and you could just feel it in the stadium, couldn’t you? Everyone was so happy, everything went well."
Ferguson also revealed he spoke with Chairman Bill Kenwright and majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri following the final whistle.
“They said congratulations, unbelievable for giving a bit of pride back to the Club,” he said. “They were in tears. It was a massive three points.”
Everton now begin preparations for a meeting with in-form Manchester United next Sunday.
Two of Ferguson's 72 goals for Everton over two cherished spells were famous winners against United.
The Scot will ready the team for the trip to Old Trafford at USM Finch Farm this week, and says he will relish the opportunity to lead the side once more if required.
"I can rest tonight and tomorrow," he said.
"Then we can get back to it during the week. We will see where we are and see what is happening in the next game.

"Today was about getting the three points but now we have got a full week to get them recovered and go again.
"That [performance] has to be the base line for what we are doing.
"We have got to make sure the work ethic, running around and covering the grass – doing the things they should be doing, anyway – remains.
"There is no walking. You must do it. You have to cover the full-backs. You must run."
