Silva On Gomes Latest, What He's Told Richarlison And VAR

Marco Silva says Everton have received “really good feedback” on the first stage of Andre Gomes’s treatment for a fracture dislocation of his ankle – and the midfielder will spend 15 days at home ahead of embarking on his rehabilitation programme.

Talking exclusively to evertontv, manager Silva revealed Gomes visited his teammates at USM Finch Farm on Tuesday – and insisted Everton’s squad would draw “strength and togetherness” from the Portugal international’s setback.

Silva also explained why he has told Richarlison to “stand and be strong” in the midst of Premier League battle.

Richarlison is one of only two outfield players, beside left-back Lucas Digne, who has been ever present for Everton in all competitions this season.

The attacker has scored four goals, adding to his tally of 14 from last season, and assisted a further two.

Only six Premier League players have been fouled more than Richarlison this season, the Brazilian impeded 23 times in 11 games. He was the fifth most fouled player in the top-flight last term.

And Silva has also given his latest views on VAR dominating the football agenda.

“Richarlison has a strong mentality, he is a worker, no doubts about that,” said Silva.

“That’s part of his talent… and part of his talent is that feeling and smell of the goal around the box.

“We are working with him because the Premier League is really tough and the message and the feedback to him is to always to stand as much as he can. Don’t fall down... even if it looks in many, many moments that the decisions are not fair with him.”

Addressing the ongoing debate about the influence of video assistant referees – after Everton’s meeting with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday saw a series of extended delays – Silva insisted it is essential to “protect… the pace, intensity and quality” of Premier League football.

Silva on Gomes

“The surgery went really well and all the feedback we’ve had until now was really good.

“Andre is home, with all the support of our medical staff.

“He was with us yesterday at Finch Farm and it was really good for everyone to see him, to have that first contact with him after a tough moment for all of us.

“All the messages Andre’s received from around the world show the big respect everyone has for him.

“Not just as a football player, everyone recognises he’s a very good football player, at the top, top level, but as a man as well.

“Everyone loves him in our football cub and everyone around the world was really supportive of him.

“Andre has had some injuries in the past, not so tough and serious [as this one], and he won those challenges.

“And it will be the same again, I don’t have doubts.

“He will become stronger as a football player but more as a man.

"These type of situations have to give us the strength and togetherness to challenge what will come as a football club."

Silva on Richarlison

"He is a worker and never gives up. Of course, we are working with him because the Premier League is really tough and the message and feedback to him is to always to stand as much as he can.

"Don’t fall down... even if it looks in many, many moments that the decisions are not fair with him. What I am saying to Richarlison, and our staff as well, is for him to keep standing as much as he can and in the right moments the referee will be fair with him, because we feel that it is a little bit not so fair.

"But it’s what we are working on with him, to keep standing and be strong because the contact in the Premier League is really strong as well. And, for sure, after [you remain strong] football and the decisions will be fair with you. But he has the quality and never gives up.

"He has the talent to score goals as well and is always ready to help his teammates, not just with the ball but without the ball, too."

Silva on VAR dominating the current football agenda

"As a manager, it’s tough for us because we love football.

"I said after the match [against Spurs] we are here to play for our fans. I’m 100 per cent sure the last game was not a good example because all of us know the passion of the Premier League.

"Everyone loves to see that pace and intensity, that quality, in the Premier League.

"But there were many, many stops and the last game was not a good example at all.

"I know it was a tough game... a tough game for the referee and a tough game for me as a manager and Mauricio [Pochettino, Spurs boss]. A tough game for the players as well. Second half, there were more contacts, more contacts in the box, more moments in both boxes as well.

"It was a tough one to see it take almost three minutes to make some decisions.

"I’m 100 per cent sure the referees, the VAR and everyone who is in control of everything, have tried to get things settled as fast as they can because they have to protect the game, they have to protect what the fans love to see as well."
