Davies: We're Only Looking Forward Now

Tom Davies says Everton are "only looking forward now" after ending a run of four straight league defeats with a much-improved performance and 2-0 win over West Ham United.

Bernard set the Blues on their way with a crafty first-half opener, and even though the hosts had to wait until the 92nd-minute for substitute Gylfi Sigurdsson to confirm victory with a stunning long-range effort, the returning Davies felt the outcome was more than merited.

Davies' 50th Premier League start for the Club was also his first in the competition this season but the Academy graduate turned in a commanding display in the middle of the park alongside the fit-again Andre Gomes.

Everton now begin preparations for a trip to Brighton and Hove Albion's Amex Stadium next Saturday.

"I think it was a good all-round performance from the lads and for me to be back in the team and get a win, I'm made up," said Davies.

"You're always happy with a win. We've got two goals and a clean sheet and the way we played was good.

"It was an open game and I thought we held it together at the back well and attacked just as well.

"We're only looking forward now. It's a good win and we're happy with it but then it's just on to next week.

"We've all played well and now we can go into next week with more confidence and look to build on it, which is what we want to do.

"For us all, it's about training hard and getting back out there and doing the same again next week."

HIGHLIGHTS: EVERTON 2-0 WEST HAM

Bernard and Sigurdsson strikes give Blues much-deserved victory.

Gomes was starting for the first time in five Premier League matches having managed his first six minutes since suffering a rib injury in early September away at Burnley before the international break.

Slotting in alongside Davies, the Portuguese turned in a man of the match display as West Ham were harried by the Blues and restricted to just four shots on target.

Davies explained how the team had been given a game plan to combat the physical threat of a Hammers side who arrived on Merseyside eighth in the table and unbeaten in four away outings, and was buoyed by the way he clicked with Gomes despite the pair's minimal game time this term.

The England Under-21 international also reserved praise for both goals, Bernard's being a reward for guile and persistence, Sigurdsson's a trademark long-range rocket.

"Both [goals] were fantastic," he said. "I don't know how Bernard has got that first one in but it's a quality goal, and then Gylfi's come on and scored a screamer.

"That was great because we could relax a bit more and see the game out for those last few minutes. For both the lads, scoring two worldies, I'm made up for them."

He added: "The way West Ham play, we knew they sometimes leave the wingers forward and they've got a big man up front and we switched to a sort of 4-4-2 if we needed to be aware of that.

"We needed to have a solid midfield, which I think me and Andre have done well today.

"For the both of us, it was just about holding the middle of the pitch, controlling that, and we knew from there we'd get a good performance if we could do that."
