Everton Striker Is Last-Gasp Hero

Jordan Pickford and Michael Keane both completed 90 minutes for England in Czech Republic on Friday but were unable to prevent Gareth Southgate’s side from suffering a first defeat of this European Championship qualifying campaign.

Everton pair Pickford and Keane have been ever present in England’s bid to reach next summer’s finals and went into the fixture in Prague after four wins from four in Group A.

Both sides struck inside the opening nine minutes and Pickford made two smart stops after half-time to keep his side level.

The goalkeeper was fully extended to tip over from Lukas Masopust’s rising drive on the hour and 17 minutes later stood tall at his near post to repel Alex Kral’s firmly-hit strike.

But with the teams seemingly poised to claim one point apiece the Czechs broke to bag all three when substitute Zdenek Ondrasek, the 30-year-old FC Dallas striker on as a substitute for his debut, steered home from the ubiquitous Masopust’s precise cut back.

Harry Kane put England in front from the spot on five minutes following Czech midfielder Masopust’s trip on Raheem Sterling in the box.

The visitors’ lead lasted only four minutes, however, Jakub Brabec sweeping in at the back post after a corner from the left was inadvertently touched on by the advancing Ondrej Celustka.

England are level on 12 points with Czech Republic at the top of Group A but manager Southgate’s side have played a game less and own a superior goal difference.

The Three Lions will aim to re-establish a three-point cushion at the summit when they face Bulgaria in Sofia on Monday.

Cenk Tosun was the hero for Turkey in Istanbul after the Everton striker pounced in the 90th minute to win his country’s crucial qualifying Group H contest with Albania.

An open game appeared destined to finish goalless until Tosun headed past goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha for the 28-year-old’s 16th international goal on his 41st appearnace.

Elsewhere in Group H, Lucas Digne’s France secured a precious single-goal victory against Iceland, with Everton midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson lining up for the home team in Reykjavik.

The world champion French dominated and aimed 22 shots at goal against Iceland’s six but had to wait until midway through the second half for a breakthrough.

Antoine Griezmann was impeded by Ari Freyr Skulason in the penalty area and Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud held his nerve to convert from the spot.

Everton left-back Digne won his 29th cap in the game, while clubmate Djibril Sidibe was an unused substitute.

Turkey and France are level on 18 points, the Turks top as a consequence of the sides' head-to-head record, and both countries hold a six-point advantage over Iceland.

The group leaders clash in Paris on Monday, while Iceland are back in action on the same day at home to Andorra.

Andre Gomes remained on the bench as Portugal brushed aside minnows Luxembourg 3-0 in Lisbon.

Everton midfielder Gomes was summoned by his national side this week following the withdrawal of Real Betis powerhouse William Carvalho.

Reigning champions Portugal are safely tucked in a top-two qualifying berth in Group B and will aim to put a dent in Ukraine’s five-point lead at the summit when the teams meet in Kiev on Monday.

Tom Davies, meanwhile, started and finished England Under-21s’ 2-2 friendly draw in Slovenia.

Aidy Boothroyd’s side broke the deadlock when Eddie Nketiah, the Arsenal striker on loan with Leeds United, won and scored a penalty six minutes before half-time.

Sam Surridge, currently on loan at Swansea City from Bournemouth, doubled England’s advantage with 20 minutes to play.

But the Slovenians – joint hosts with Hungary of next year’s European Under-21 Championship – reeled in manager Boothroyd’s team late on.

Midfielder Dejan Petrovic set up a grandstand finish when he halved the hosts’ deficit with eight minutes remaining.

And Slovenia rescued a draw – despite having only 22 per cent possession in a game controlled by the visitors, with Davies influential in a holding midfield role – four minutes into stoppage time, Janez Pisek’s deflected free-kick defeating goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

England Under-21s will aim to extend their 100 per cent winning start to Euro 2021 qualifying when they tackle Austria in Milton Keynes on Tuesday.
