DCL On What It Means To Be Everton's Number Nine

Dominic Calvert-Lewin says he is embracing the “big responsibility” of wearing Everton’s number nine shirt and insists he is hungry to remain on the goalscoring trail after his brace at Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night.

Calvert-Lewin marked his 100th Everton appearance in style at Hillsborough as the Blues secured their progress to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 victory.

The 22-year-old crashed an effort in off the crossbar to put Marco Silva’s team in front after six minutes, before applying the finishing touch to a slick Everton move to complete his double.

A boyhood Sheffield United fan, Calvert-Lewin admitted scoring against the Blades’ city rivals was “very special”.

The striker believes his impressive goalscoring display can act as a springboard for his campaign. He also revealed how the honour of following in the footsteps of the illustrious strikers who have worn Everton’s number nine shirt is not one he takes lightly.

“With a big number like that comes big responsibility,” Calvert-Lewin told evertontv.

“I accepted that role and I am grateful to be wearing the number nine for Everton. It is a massive thing for me.

“But the most important thing is my performances.

“It doesn’t matter what number you are wearing, it is about scoring goals.

“I am a striker, scoring goals is what I am there to do

“It is what I work on every day. I work on my craft in training.

“I had a bit of a slow start to the season but need to take confidence from scoring two against Wednesday into the next game and kick on from there.”

Everton have been handed a home tie in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, with Quique Sanchez Flores’ Watford set to visit Goodison Park on 29 October.

The Blues’ attention turns back to the Premier League on Saturday as Silva’s side host Premier League champions Manchester City at Goodison (5.30pm).

Calvert-Lewin says the team will approach the match with a positive mindset after that conclusive success against Wednesday.

“Collectively, it’s a chance to pick up momentum,” he added.

“You have to try to take that from wins.

“Personally, I want to take momentum after scoring twice in the cup.

“It will be a tough game on Saturday but that is what you expect [in the Premier League].

“We all enjoy playing at Goodison Park and are looking forward to the game.”
