Calvert-Lewin On Why Wednesday Double Was So 'Special'

Dominic Calvert-Lewin says scoring twice on his 100th Everton appearance was a “special moment” – after the striker’s double against Sheffield Wednesday booked his side’s spot in the Carabao Cup fourth round.

The occasion was all the sweeter for Calvert-Lewin coming at Wednesday’s Hillsborough home, a stadium located 1.7 miles from the player’s childhood school.

Everton started the game at a furious pace and their intent was rewarded with two goals inside 10 minutes.

Calvert-Lewin controlled Djibril Sidibe’s raking pass on his thigh before thrashing the ball beyond Cameron Dawson and off the underside of the bar for Everton’s opener on six minutes.

The 22-year-old toed in his second from close range after Alex Iwobi’s cross eliminated Wednesday goalkeeper Dawson and found Calvert-Lewin’s clever run to the far post.

“I grew up a stone’s throw from here, I used to come past this stadium every day on my way to training at Sheffield United,” Calvert-Lewin told evertontv.

“It was a very special night and a lot of my family and friends were here.

“I grew up looking at this stadium from when I was a young boy, so to play here and do what I have tonight is very special.

“My mum text me before the game to tell me it was my 100th for Everton.

“It has gone in a flash, it is crazy how fast it goes.

“I am delighted to be wearing the Everton shirt and every time I pull it on I want to do my best for the Club.”

Calvert-Lewin joined Everton from Sheffield United in August 2016 and has scored 20 goals in his century of games, 56 of them starts.

He has three in his past two matches after netting against Bournemouth 10 days ago.

The Yorkshireman was denied a hat-trick back in his home city by a fine reaction stop from Dawson to keep out Calvert-Lewin’s powerful header on 33 minutes.

Everton had further opportunities to add to their tally, Richarlison’s bullet header whistling over and Lucas Digne narrowly wide with a late effort from 20 yards.

Marco Silva’s side nevertheless eased into Wednesday’s fourth-round draw, this victory across the Pennines following a round two win at Lincoln City.

“We want to win every time we step on the pitch but to win a cup and bring it back to Goodison would be a big, big thing,” added Calvert-Lewin.

“We are taking it very seriously and we have done the job tonight.

“We have to be pleased, it was an important game for us and we put in a good performance.

“You need to win when it is the cup but we wanted to play well.

“We got the two-goal lead and could have gone on and killed off the game so that is something we can learn from.

“But on a personal note it was nice to get two goals early.

“I was disappointed not to get three but it was a good night’s work.”
