Keane On Goodison 'Wow' Factor

Michael Keane says the sound and fervour of Goodison Park is infusing Everton’s players with an extra surge of energy.

The Blues have won their past six home matches and are unbeaten in seven on their own ground, a run which dates back to the scoreless Merseyside derby on 3 March.

Indeed, shutting out Liverpool – on the day when Goodison introduced wailing sirens as a precursor to Z-Cars and defender Keane claimed man-of-the-match honours – prompted a sequence of six matches without conceding in L4.

Romain Saiss of Wolverhampton Wanderers became the first visiting player to score at Goodison in 549 minutes of Premier League football three weeks ago – but to no avail with the Moroccan’s side beaten 3-2.

Everton host Sheffield United on Saturday aiming to continue their flawless start at home this term.

“You get goosebumps every time you walk out at Goodison,” Keane told evertonfc.com.

“When you hear those sirens go, it gives you a lift, it really does.

“You hear in the tunnel how loud the fans are, then come out and think, ‘Wow’.

“It gives you an extra boost of energy.

“I think it makes you concentrate a bit more as well.

“You have to try to block out the noise once the game starts and fully concentrate.

“But the fans can play a huge part for us.

“They have shown that in the past five or six months.

“Our home form has been brilliant and they have been right behind us.

“We have played well – but they have definitely helped us out.”

Everton had kept 10 clean sheets in 13 Premier League matches prior to last month’s defeat at Aston Villa.

They overcame the shock of being breached twice at home to defeat Wolves but last Sunday suffered the disappointment of losing at Bournemouth.

SILVA ON KEY ATTRIBUTE EVERTON MUST REDISCOVER

Manager spells out areas for improvement.

Marco Silva talked in the immediate aftermath of that game on the south cost of his team needing to rapidly rediscover the solidity which characterised their football for such a long period.

And Keane reckons Evertonians can aid the players’ bid to answer their manager’s call.

Goodison roared Silva’s side over the line as Watford rained balls into Everton’s box in the hunt for an equaliser during the Blues' opening home game this term.

Midfielder Saiss’s equaliser for Wolves could not puncture the Goodison atmosphere, nor Raul Jimenez’s second-half leveller after Alex Iwobi had restored Everton’s lead.

Rather, the ground summoned another wave of support and Everton responded in kind to bag three points courtesy of Richarlison’s second goal of the match.

“I think the fans have recognised we’re on a really good run at home and trying to play the right football,” added Keane.

“We have shown good character a few times to bounce back after conceding goals and they are really sticking with us.

“I think there is a strong relationship developing between the players and fans, which makes it even more special to play at Goodison.

“It has always been an amazing place to play, but when the atmosphere is like that, it is not an easy place for an away player to come.

“All of our players would say the same.”

On the imperative of returning to the obdurate unit of a few weeks ago, Keane added: “When you get on a run like that [10 clean sheets in 13], you want to do it more and more.

“We are gutted when we concede.

“But if you look at how we have been defending over the long run, we will get back to that.

“That run was something we were all very proud of, not just the defenders.

“It starts from the strikers, the way they stop opposition midfielders getting on the ball.

"Those little things throughout the team are important and we all have to get back to doing them to achieve the results we want."
