Silva On What Every Everton Player Must Contribute To Team

Marco Silva is demanding all his players take responsibility for “commanding the team” during matches.

Midfielder Fabian Delph deservedly won huge plaudits for his influential role in Everton’s 3-2 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers last week.

A good deal of the praise which fell Delph’s way focussed on the England international’s leadership credentials.

Equally, manager Silva identified the 29-year-old’s aptitude for driving on his teammates as one of the reasons for prising him from Manchester City this summer.

The Everton manager, however, insists the ability to cajole and inspire is a prerequisite for any player featuring in his team.

“When we looked at our squad last season, we saw some important things Fabian could add,” Silva told evertontv.

“Not just his football qualities… he can give us different things and will be an important player for us.

“But what I want from Fabian, I want from the others, too. I demand it from the others.

“I don’t just want it in that position from Fabian – it is really important midfield players, everyone in the central zone, have that leadership and can command the team in some moments.

“What I am demanding from Fabian, I want the same from Andre [Gomes], the same from Morgan [Schneiderlin] and from Michael Keane and Yerry Mina.

“And from our goalkeeper.

“The positions in the central zone are really important and we need players in there with the capacity to lead.

“I don’t want to put the focus only on Fabian because I want the others to come and take responsibility as well.”

Two-times Premier League winner Delph made his first competitive start for Everton in last month’s victory at Lincoln City.

He followed a strong performance in that Carabao Cup tie with a dynamic contribution against Wolves which won rave reviews from supporters and pundits.

Delph was instrumental to Everton’s compelling response when the Midlands side scored their second equaliser with 15 minutes remaining.

As if to underline their manager’s point, though, Silva’s team took collective charge of the contest, playing with an urgency and rhythm that were too much for Wolves to resist.

Richarlison headed home a cross from overlapping full-back Lucas Digne – one of four players included on Silva’s captaincy roster this term – to send Everton into the ongoing international break with seven points from their opening four Premier League matches.

“Since Fabian signed with us, I said how he will be important,” added Silva.

“It is something you want when you sign a player, they have to be able to give something to us, to strengthen our squad.

“Sometimes we try to find things from a technical point of view, sometimes other things as well.

“But all of us have to take this responsibility, starting with me as the manager – all of them take this responsibility.

“It is a good thing, a good pressure – to go to a football match to take responsibility to lead and know what we have to do in each moment of the match.

“We have many good examples in our dressing room.

“If you have five, six or seven leaders during the match, it will be easier for us. And that is what I want.”
