Chance To Enter 5k Everton-Themed Run For EitC

Everton in the Community has partnered with race organisers BTR Liverpool to host the city’s first ever Everton-themed 5K run.

Taking place on Sunday 13 October with a 9.30am start, the ‘If You Know Your History’ event will take participants on a 5k journey through 141 years of Everton Football Club’s history and will raise vital funds for The People’s Place, Everton in the Community’s fundraising campaign to build and develop a purpose-built mental health facility close to Goodison Park that will support anyone in times of need.

The event is open to all the family and welcomes both runners and walkers. It will begin at the 1787 Lock-Up Tower - which sits at the heart of the Everton crest - and on the journey to Goodison Park will take in the historical sites of the original Everton Toffee Shop and the site of the former Queen’s Head Hotel where, in November 1879, St Domingo’s FC became Everton Football Club.

Competitors will then journey to the Sandon Pub on Oakfield Road - which became the Club’s second headquarters in 1884 – before passing into Stanley Park, where Everton first played in 1878, before moving towards Priory Road where the Blues played for three seasons between 1881 and 1884.

Turning left in the park will lead participants towards Goodison Park, home of Everton Football Club since 1892, and finish in view of the Sir Philip Park End Stand.

Organised in partnership with BTR Liverpool, the ‘If You Know Your History’ event will include various information points along the route that will be staffed by Friends of Everton Park and the Everton Heritage Society.

Everton in the Community CEO Richard Kenyon said: “We are really excited to be working with BTR Liverpool to launch the first ever Everton-themed 5k event. Regardless of whether you’re running or walking, it will be a fun event for all of the family to get involved in as well as a chance to learn more about the Club’s illustrious 141-year history as you travel through the course.

“Everyone appreciates the physical benefits of exercise, but the mental health benefits of exercise can often be overlooked. It can help boost your self-esteem and confidence as well as decreasing depression and anxiety. I’d love to see as many people as possible taking part and helping us raise money for The People’s Place, whilst battling the stigma surrounding mental health.”

BTR Liverpool Event Organiser Alan Rothwell added: “This new 5k event is something really different as it showcases first-hand the history of this famous football club and gives supporters a whole new perspective on the 141 years from the beginnings back in 1878. Add to that, the incentive to help raise £1,000,000 needed to build the fantastic People's Place, then participants will know they are playing a role in the future development of Everton In the Community and the tremendous work it undertakes across Merseyside."

Entry to the event costs £20 and includes entry to the event, a commemorative T-shirt and a finisher's medal. Competitors are asked to fundraise a minimum of £50 with all funds going to ‘The People’s Place’ and will see Everton in the Community develop a delivery site for the charity’s existing mental health programmes and enable signposting to other services.

All participants raising over £50 for The People’s Place will be entered into a prize draw to win a pair of Goodison Park stadium tour tickets or a signed Everton shirt. You can set up your fundraising page today by visiting https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/peoplesplace and clicking ‘start fundraising’.

The People’s Place will provide an overarching service to anyone, regardless of age, gender, location or football colours, to promote positive mental health and deliver support relating to suicide awareness and prevention.

Please note, the entry fee pays to stage and deliver all aspects of the event to ensure it takes place, including T-shirts, medals, race packs, road closures, and other resulting delivery costs. Participants are encouraged to fundraise.
