Under-23s Seek To Extend Unbeaten Start

Everton Under-23s tackle newly-promoted Southampton in a Premier League 2 contest at Southport's Pure Stadium on Friday (7pm).

David Unsworth's side beat League Two Mansfield Town on penalties earlier this week, an outcome which the manager viewed as just reward for his players' "best" performance of the campaign.

Anthony Gordon was on target in that Leasing.com Trophy game, which ended 1-1 after normal time – the striker adding to his double in a 2-2 Premier League 2 draw at Arsenal seven days ago.

Indeed, Everton have started the defence of their Premier League 2 crown with a trio of draws.

They finished scoreless with Wolverhampton Wanderers a fortnight ago after opening the season with a similar result at home against Leicester City.

Southampton were pipped to last season's Division 2 title by Wolves, who claimed the automatic promotion spot on goal difference.

The South Coast side nevertheless won play-off ties against Aston Villa and Newcastle United to book their Division 1 berth. They come to Everton following successive defeats by Derby County and Liverpool but opened the season with a 4-3 success at Manchester City.
