Everton Manager Silva Optimistic Over Delph Injury

Marco Silva will discover the extent of Fabian Delph’s thigh injury “in the next few days” – but the Everton manager is optimistic summer acquisition Delph has not sustained a serious problem.

The England player, signed from Manchester City last month, was forced off after just four minutes of Everton’s pre-season clash with Werder Bremen on Saturday.

Delph was starting his third game for the Club following outings in friendly matches against Wigan Athletic and Sevilla.

He is one of four new arrivals at Goodison Park ahead of the new campaign, joining fellow midfielders Andre Gomes and Jean-Philippe Gbamin and goalkeeper Jonas Lossl in joining Everton .

Delph was replaced on Saturday by Morgan Schneiderlin as Everton completed their pre-season fixtures by drawing 0-0 with German hosts Bremen.

“Fabian’s injury looked to be nothing special but let’s see in the next few days,” Silva told evertontv.

“We will have to wait some more hours to see how he is.

“He felt something in the first moments of the match in his groin so let’s see in the next few days.”

Ivory Coast international Gbamin is Silva’s newest recruit after completing his transfer from Mainz 05 on Friday.

The 23-year-old has amassed a depth of experience which belies his relatively tender years, playing 95 games for Bundesliga club Mainz in three seasons, adding to 98 appearances for former club Lens.

He has been capped by his country nine times and featured in the Africa Cup of Nations, only wrapping up his 2018/19 campaign on 11 July.

Gbamin, then, is lightly run in pre-season following his late return to work with Mainz.

He remained in England to train while Everton played Werder Bremen. And Silva will play a waiting game before determining if Gbamin – a player he believes “fits into my model” – can feature against Crystal Palace on the Premier League’s opening day next Saturday.

“Jean-Philippe will improve our squad,” added Silva.

“He’s a good size, in good physical condition and is good on the ball, which is what I like.

“We need to give him time to adapt but he fits into my model, which is important.

“He didn’t start for Mainz [in pre-season] because of the Africa Cup of Nations and didn’t play for us today because he was at Finch Farm doing some work.

“We will take the decision on him next week.”
