Silva Expects Progress Before Season Opener

Marco Silva says Everton will aim to refine their attacking play in the fortnight before the Blues launch their Premier League season at Crystal Palace on 10 August.

And the manager hopes to be busy in the transfer market before the trading window shuts in 12 days’ time.

Everton have been solid in pre-season and the goal Silva’s side let in against Sevilla on Saturday represented the first time they had conceded in more than six hours of football.

The Blues have scored three times in pre-season, however, the latest coming via the right boot of defender Lewis Gibson in Everton’s defeat against Mainz.

Everton did carve open Sevilla on a few occasions, Dominic Calvert-Lewin toeing marginally wide from inside the box and then seeing a powerful header saved by goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik.

“We have to look at the two games [against Sevilla and Mainz] in different ways, the responsibility in the first game was completely different from the second,” Silva told evertontv.

“We are not happy, because the responsibility for Everton is always to try to win matches, even if it is pre-season.

“But the players are working hard and in these matches they sometimes go in more heavy [legged].

“It was two more games to give us the competition we want at this moment.

“During the Sevilla match, even if we did not create many chances, we created two clear opportunities to score.

“We are preparing something but pre-season gives us some signs also.

“We have scored three goals in five games – one direct free-kick, one from the right-back and one from our centre-back after a corner.

“But there is time left in the market, even if it goes to the last week – which can happen.

“We are talking about Dominic’s first week in pre-season and he is working very hard.

“We have to do different things in our offensive organisation – in order to create more chances and score more goals.”

GOALSCORER GIBSON EAGER TO KICK ON AT EVERTON

Defender on pre-season chances and learning from boss Marco Silva.

Everton next face Werder Bremen in seven days' time to wrap up an examining run of warm-up fixtures ahead of next month’s Premier League kick-off at Selhurst Park.

Silva’s team drew 0-0 with FC Sion and beat Monaco 1-0 in Switzerland. They started pre-season by drawing 1-1 against Kenyan team Kariobangi Sharks.

Sevilla and German outfit Mainz, though, inflicted back-to-back defeats on Everton, who shared a goalless draw with Wigan in midweek.

Michael Keane sat out the weekend’s double header in Germany after being forced off with a cut above his eye at Wigan.

Manager Silva explained, however, that Keane’s non-involvement was simply a precaution and expects to have the defender available for next week’s game in Bremen.

“If it was a competitive game Michael would have played,” added Silva.

“The message to me from the medical staff was to give him slightly longer, to protect the cut.

“The boys are working really, really hard.

“We want to see some important things during the match and this afternoon we didn’t see so many.

“It is up to me to show the players why things happened – why we did not win the matches – and to keep doing what we should behind the scenes.”
