Delph Wants Everton 'Winning Mentality'

Fabian Delph hopes his "winning mentality" can further galvanise a confident and ambitious Everton dressing room.

Midfielder Delph, who claimed six major honours in four seasons with Manchester City, insists his new club's players are united in their determination to bring success to Goodison Park.

The 29-year-old, a Premier League winner in each of the past two seasons, spent the first week of his Blues career at a pre-season camp in Switzerland.

And, on first impressions, the 20-cap England international is certain Everton boast the quality and steel to carry forward the momentum from a fabulous end to last season when the new Premier League campaign kicks off next month.

“My main goal is to be successful and try to win something with Everton,” said Delph.

“It is top of my list to try to push the lads – and for them to push me – so we can all head in the same direction and try to win something.

“The winning mentality is massive [in generating success].

“Everybody needs to be ‘on it’ in training, to train with that winning mentality.

“We need to have everybody heading in the same direction.

“There are no egos here, everybody works really hard, there is a great work ethic.

“The staff are fantastic, so if everybody aims for the same goals and heads in the same direction, I am confident the Club can have success.”

Delph won one FA Cup and three League Cups with City.

He played 22 Premier League matches in 2017/18 when Pep Guardiola’s side amassed 100 points to run away with the title.

The former Aston Villa player attributes his uncompromising outlook to a tough upbringing in the academy at Leeds United.

And he is not for changing after arriving at Everton as Marco Silva’s third signing this summer.

Manager Silva completed a permanent deal for Andre Gomes from Barcelona and swelled his goalkeeping ranks with the addition of former Huddersfield Town number one Jonas Lossl.

Everton launch their season at Crystal Palace in little over a fortnight and Delph, who excelled in an unfamiliar left-back position for City, is ready to get his teeth into whichever role he fills for the Blues.

Regardless of his assignment on the pitch, however, the Yorkshireman is promising to use his leadership credentials as a force for good at Everton.

“It is important for everybody to play their part and it [leading] comes easier for me as an older player,” added Delph.

“Leaders are something a team needs to be successful, you don’t need to be the best player in the team to have an influence on people.

“If you have leadership qualities, you can drive that winning mentality and determination to be successful.

“You have to set your standards high and have good habits.

“Whatever role I am asked to play on or off the pitch, you will get the same drive and desire from me.

"It is the way I am and the way I have always been.

“We are judged on whether we win games and that is what we need to be doing.”
