Osman Hails Everton's Delph Capture

Leon Osman says Everton have pulled off a major coup by prising “cultured" midfielder and two-times Premier League winner Fabian Delph to the Club.

England international Delph completed a move to Everton from reigning champions Manchester City this week.

And former Everton midfielder Osman insists it is a measure of his old club’s progress and potential that Delph jumped at the opportunity to trade the Etihad Stadium for Goodison Park.

“Fabian is the type of player we want at our Club and it is great we can attract footballers of that calibre and with such great experience,” Osman told evertonfc.com.

“These top players have the desire to join our Club.

“They can see the project Marco Silva has under way at Everton  and Fabian sees he can play a big part in what is happening.

“He’s a tough-tackling midfielder and very cultured in possession and I think it is a great deal for Everton.

“On and off the field he looks the right kind of character.

“To get a Premier League winner to leave the champions and come and join your club is a big thing.”

Delph claimed six major pieces of silverware in four years at Manchester City, adding one FA Cup and three League Cup winners medals to his personal haul.

He was one of the bedrocks of the club’s astonishing 2017/18 season, consistently featuring in a City side which romped to the championship with 100 points.

Delph predominantly operated at left-back in that campaign, a shift from the midfield position in which he duelled with Osman as both a City and Aston Villa player.

And tapping into that first-hand experience of going toe-to-toe with Delph, Osman says Everton have acquired a footballer capable of performing any number of assignments.

“He is very good wherever he plays: central midfield, a holding role, box to box or at left-back,” said Osman, who played 433 matches for Everton, tying him with Dixie Dean as the Club’s joint-10th highest appearance maker.

“I have seen him do all those things.

“He gives Marco Silva an awful lot of options and an awful lot of quality.

“He will be eager to play more football and has played at the top level – in the Champions League and for England.

“You need experience to supplement the youth in the squad. With the experience he has – and I think he has a lot of football left in his legs – it a terrific deal.

“Now it’s about what he can do on the field and how he can help his teammates – and I am looking forward to seeing him play for Everton.”

Delph follows Andre Gomes and goalkeeper Jonas Lossl in joining Everton this summer.

Portuguese Gomes committed to the Club permanently after originally signing on loan as one of a wave of talented internationals recruited by Silva during his first summer in charge.
