Seven Things About Fabian Delph

Fabian Delph became Everton’s third summer signing when he joined from Manchester City this week to follow Andre Gomes and Jonas Lossl into Goodison Park.

Twice a Premier League winner with City, the athletic midfielder is an important member of Gareth Southgate’s England squad and has 20 caps for his country.

Here, in seven bitesize chunks, evertonfc.com provides you with some fresh insight on Marco Silva’s latest recruit.

No Fear

Delph was marked out as a footballer destined for the pinnacle of his profession from the outset.

He was established as first pick in Leeds United’s midfield as a teenager, the Yorkshireman apparently impervious to the pressure of trying to get three-times English champions Leeds out of League One.

Delph’s classy left foot and vision, employed to terrific effect amid the fury of third-tier football, won him a legion of fans at Elland Road.

For his more experienced teammates, it was the youngster’s bite and tenacity which set him apart.

Andy Robinson, the seasoned former Swansea winger, passed a glowing verdict on his junior colleague: “He snaps you in the tackle… he's been whacking senior pros in training and the gaffer had to say 'slow down', but it's a sign of confidence in such a young player,” said Robinson.

“Right now, he's the first name on the teamsheet and he's going all the way to the Premier League."

WATCH: DELPH'S EXCLUSIVE FIRST INTERVIEW

Midfielder joins Blues on three-year deal to June 2022.

Name In Lights

Delph’s individual excellence has been recognised on numerous occasions. He made a good judge of Robinson by landing a trio of prizes at Leeds’ end-of-season awards in 2008/09, Delph adding the club’s goal of the season gong to young player and players’ player honours.

He was crowned League One’s Young Player of the Year, too, and accordingly named in the division’s team of the year.

Delph was voted by supporters as Aston Villa’s player of the season in each of his final two seasons with the club.

Record Breaker

Manchester City smashed a host of Premier League records as they romped to the title in 2017/18 – and Delph was one of the principal figures in a startling campaign.

He started 14 matches of a City 18-game winning run – a streak which eclipsed the previous best 13 straight victories achieved by Chelsea and Arsenal – operating in a left-back slot he’d filled only on occasion for Leeds and Aston Villa.

Benjamin Mendy had been expected to occupy that position following a £52million transfer from Monaco.

The Frenchman, though, was blighted by injury, presenting Delph with an unexpected opportunity his mobility and football intelligence enabled him to grasp.

“Fabian is always a banker for us – and the other players know it,” said Pep Guardiola.

Delph reinforced his manager’s claim, assuming a pivotal role as City reached 100 points, 19 ahead of second placed Manchester United, scored 106 goals and won 32 games – all numbers unsurpassed in the Premier League era.

Home From Home

Delph will enter an Everton dressing room populated by plenty of familiar faces.

Leighton Baines was in the England team when Delph made his Three Lions debut against Norway in September 2014 – and again five days later as the younger man featured in his first competitive international match and helped Roy Hodgson’s side defeat Switzerland in European Championship qualifying.

Delph and Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford have played together on nine occasions for England, while the former Leeds player was in the side when Michael Keane made his national team return against USA last November.

He has played four times with Theo Walcott, too, and provided a goal for the forward in a 6-0 drubbing of San Marino four years ago.

Midas Touch

When Delph scores, his team wins. Moreover, he tends to hit the net at crunch periods in games.

Top of the player’s goals pile – in terms of significance, at least – was his strike to beat Liverpool in the 2015 FA Cup semi-final and book Aston Villa’s return to the Wembley showpiece following a 15-year wait.

Delph’s first Premier League goal for Villa was a left-foot howitzer to win a match at Southampton and he provided the decisive effort when his team toppled title-chasing Chelsea in March 2014.

The midfielder scored eight times for Villa in all and the Midlanders won on each occasion.

Delph’s five City goals all coincided with victories for his side and the same can be said for the player’s six efforts for first-club Leeds.

International In Demand

Delph made his competitive England debut in a European Championship qualifying match against Switzerland in September 2014.

His first Three Lions senior appearance came five days previously in a friendly clash with Norway – but Delph’s outing against the Swiss signalled the end of Guyana’s hopes of persuading the player to switch allegiance to the Caribbean Island.

Delph’s heritage qualified him to represent Guyana and the country retained hope of securing the midfielder’s services even after he had represented England at Under-19 and Under-21 level.

The player took to international football as if to the manner born. He was broadly considered one of England’s best players in Switzerland and retained his place in Roy Hodgson’s team, only to miss out on Euro 2016 with a groin injury.

Delph made his major tournament bow two years later when he played four times in England’s Russian World Cup campaign.

He added caps 19 and 20 last month when England contested the Nations League finals in Portugal.

Box-To-Box Boxer

Delph was raised in Bradford and growing up in the city developed a passion for boxing.

He credits the sport for helping him channel his inherent aggression and was in his local boxing gym whenever time allowed.

“I had ants in my pants as a kid and could never sit still,” said Delph. “When I wasn’t playing football, I’d be down the boxing club.

“I’d be about nine and, yeah, I’d come home with a black eye every so often.

“I had a dabble at kick-boxing as well. I did quite a lot. There were no actual contests but I’ve been in the ring and sparred with all the gear on throwing bombs – I’m lethal”

As a footnote, Delph attributes his combative on-pitch nature to the doubters who questioned his stature as a youngster.

A sinewy 5ft 7in today, Delph has no issues standing his ground in the Premier League’s notoriously no-holds-barred engine rooms.

“My size was seen as a massive problem to start with,” he said.

“I was a really slow developer. I struggled, but I knew I had the hunger to be good.

“It drove me on – it kind of made me angry and frustrated. I was aggressive in the tackle because people kept saying I was too small.

“It made me want to tackle that bit harder.”
