Match Report - Everton vs Man Utd (Barclays Premier League)

Dan Gosling was Everton's supersub once again as his goal helped secure another momentous Everton win - this time 3-1 against Manchester United.

Gosling - last season's Merseyside derby hero - emerged from the bench as a second half substitute and promptly put his side 2-1 up against the title chasers.

He helped the Blues turn the game on its head after Dimitar Berbatov's clinical finish on 15 minutes had given United the lead.

That effort was immediately cancelled out by Diniyar Bilyaletdinov's left-foot bullet. Then in the second half Everton matched United stride for stride until Gosling - clearly the man for the big occasion - stroked home Steven Pienaar's centre in the 76th minute.

More joy was to come as fellow sub Jack Rodwell drove powerfully through midfield and slotted home in composed fashion to make the score 3-1.

As early as the fourth minute a mazy run by Leon Osman saw him enter the United box but, crowded out, he pulled his shot tamely wide

The visitors' first chance came seven minutes later when Wayne Rooney teed up Darren Fletcher but the Scot's effort was miles over the bar.

Play went straight to the other end and Goodison screamed for a penalty when Antonio Valencia blocked a Leighton Baines cross with his arms, then Wes Brown cleared from under his own bar with Saha lurking.

The Frenchman then tested Edwin van der Saar with a stinging low drive from long range which was beaten away.

The first goal came 15 minutes in when the troublesome Valencia drilled in a low cross and Sylvain Distin's attempted clearance fell to Berbatov on the edge of the six yard box, the Bulgarian finishing clinically off the underside of the bar.

But Everton's deserved reply was almost instant and came thanks to an effort of the highest quality.

Bilyaletdinov collected Saha's knock-down and sent a vicious low left-footer past a stunned van der Saar from 20 yards.

And the Russian was in again on 25 minutes, but when Saha cleverly stepped over Baines' cross, his finish was wild.

Soon Neville denied Rooney when the ex-Everton man had rounded Tim Howard but the Blues were playing the better football and excellent build up play saw Landon Donovan presented with an opportunity eight minutes before the break. The American scuffed the ball though and the chance was gone.

Just as he had at the start of the first half, Osman worried United's defence at the start of the second period, inducing Brown into a foul challenge on the edge of the box. Baines lined up the free kick but his strike went harmlessly over the bar.

Five minutes into the second period, Fletcher flashed a volley wide and soon after Berbatov's flicked header drifted wide of the goal.

Everton had decent prossession but chances were scarce - Saha's slashed attempt on the hour actually went out for a throw in.

Sir Alex Ferguson made a couple of changes midway through the half and but it was Rooney and Fletcher who had the next couple of efforts on goal.

Soon Moyes mad a change of his own with Gosling replacing goalscorer Bilyaletdinov, the switch meaning Donovan could play behind Saha.

What a change it was!The American sent Pienaar to the byline and his cross was excellently converted by the man fresh from the bench with 14 minutes remaining.

United pressed but Distin blocked Fletcher's volley and Rooney's free-kick was deflected wide before Jack Rodwell's powerful run and ice-cool finish secured the win.
