Battle For Middle Ground

Blues midfielder Jack Rodwell admits he has a fight on his hands just to make the team, such is the competition for places at Goodison Park.

Ahead of Saturday's game with Wigan Athletic, Everton look set to only be missing the suspended Mikel Arteta.

With the Toffees now back to an almost full complement, Rodwell is predicting that an upturn in fortunes is just around the corner.

"The squad is a great squad. We've always known that, the more games we play, the more it will show this season. We're underachieving at the moment but I think we'll get higher up the table," the teenager told evertontv.

"There is a lot in midfield and you've got to fight for your place. You have to be at your best every day in training just to get in the team.

"Seamus is playing in right midfield now, and Billy is looking sharp in training. Everyone is fighting fit so it's just a case of getting some wins under our belts," he added.

Everton go into the match with Wigan without a win in six Premier League games, but Rodwell believes last week's point at Chelsea will galvanise the team.

The England Under-21 international revealed that Jermaine Beckford's late equaliser at Stamford Bridge has provided a big boost for the squad.

"It was a brilliant point against Chelsea with our backs against the wall and after the defeat to West Brom," he said.

"The mood in the camp is brilliant now and everyone is buzzing.

"We always go into every game trying to win, and it's not like we weren't trying in November but now there's a bit of confidence.

"Becks got his goal and the team played well and if we can take that into the next game we'll be okay," added Rodwell.

The Academy graduate linked up well with Marouane Fellaini at the heart of the Everton midfield against Chelsea and he believes it is a partnership that can benefit both players.

"He's a great player to play alongside. He actually helps my game because he does a lot of the defensive duties," said Rodwell.

"That gives me a bit more licence to go forward. I think we well together and there's a good balance in the midfield."
