Everton Under-21s conceded late and were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw away to Colchester United on Tuesday afternoon.

Paul Tait’s side were back in Premier League Cup action and looking to build on their dominant 7-2 victory last time out in the competition against the side from Essex.

The young Blues looked on course to do so when that man again Katia Kouyate, who grabbed a hat-trick in the first meeting between the sides two weeks ago, put Everton ahead in the 15th minute.

That handed the Toffees a deserved lead and, despite an improved display from Colchester in comparison to the first game, the visitors looked on course to seal the win.

However, with less than five minutes remaining of normal time, Bradley Ihionvien netted an equaliser from a scramble in the box to rescue a point for his team.

The result leaves Everton second in Premier League Cup Group F heading into the winter break.

Tait’s side return to action in the league on 6 January (7pm GMT) when they welcome West Ham United to Southport’s Haig Avenue.
