Everton were forced to accept a point as the Blues were held to a 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Goodison Park.

A record home crowd were in attendance for the first-ever Women's Super League Merseyside derby held at the Grand Old Lady, as 22,161 spectators witnessed a historic night at Goodison Park.

Gabby George fired the Blues in front before Katie Stengel levelled for the visitors.

Everton opened the derby in dramatic fashion.

George was delivered the ball along the left side. She cut in and delivered a curling effort beyond Rachael Laws into the far corner, sending a packed Goodison wild.

Despite Everton's dominance, the visitors struck level shortly before the break.

The ball dropped to Stengel who found a yard of space inside the area and placed the ball past Courtney Brosnan in the Everton net.

Into the second half and Liverpool had thought they had taken the lead.

A corner was whipped into the box that found Leighanne Robe who finished into the bottom corner. However, Brosnan was held by Ceri Holland in the build-up and the goal was subsequently ruled out.

Jess Park had thought she sealed victory for the Toffees with a superb strike.

The ball was played over the top to the Everton forward who took the ball down before curling it into the too far corner beyond Laws. However, it wouldn’t count with the referee catching a hand ball by Park in the build up.

Everton continued to press their rivals as they chased a winner, but breakaway opportunities for Liverpool called Brosnan into action.

Miri Taylor headed the ball towards the far corner with the Ireland goalkeeper dropping low with a quick reaction to keep Everton level.

Brosnan again denied Liverpool eight minutes into added time as Holland's effort was bound for the top corner before the Everton goalkeeper stretched to palm the ball away from the Blues goal.

It's a performance that Brian Sorensen's side can build upon for when they return to action next weekend against Tottenham Hotspur at Walton Hall Park.
