Everton made it two wins from two FA WSL matches after a sumptuous brace from Chloe Kelly helped the Blues defeat Bristol City Women 2-0 at Southport FC’s The Pure Stadium on Sunday.

The Blues continued their impressive start to the season and much of that was down to the brilliance of Kelly who was unlucky not to end the game with the match ball.

France international Maeva Clemaron was the only change from last Sunday’s win at Birmingham City. The summer signing came in for the injured Hannah Cain, who missed out due to a foot injury.

Everton headed into the game off the back of an impressive opening day 1-0 win in the Midlands last weekend – the Blues’ first win on the opening day of the season in their past seven attempts – and that confidence showed in the opening half with Willie Kirk’s side dominating possession.

Bristol settled into the game after that and both sides cancelled each other for the rest of the half. The game looked to be heading into the break goalless until England international Kelly grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck by scoring two goals from outside the box to put Kirk’s side firmly in control.

With a minute left until the break, Kelly dispossessed Meaghan Sargeant on the edge of the area before skipping around Gemma Evans and blasting her effort off the post and into Sophie Baggaley’s net to put the hosts ahead.

Seconds later the impressive Kelly picked the ball up 30 yards out from goal and let rip with her long-range shot firing into the top corner to double the hosts' lead.

The goals seemed to give Everton a confidence boost in the second half with Everton pushing for a third. Kelly went agonisingly close to grabbing her hat-trick two minutes after the break, her winding run down the left wing ended with a shot that was well saved by the Baggaley at the near post.

Everton went on to hit the woodwork two more times in the second half. Chief antagonist Kelly smashed the bar with a curling effort after receiving the ball from Inessa Kaagman. Twelve minutes later it was Kaagman’s turn when she rattled the bar from a tight angle – with the hosts unlucky not to extend their lead further as the game ended 2-0.

Next up for Everton is another trip to Birmingham City next Sunday in the Continental Cup (2pm kick-off), with the Blues looking to make it three wins from three in all competitions.
