As in 1914/15 Everton's triumphs were once again over-shadowed by events on the world stage, events which prevented this Blues side from achieving the greatness that beckoned them.
Tommy Lawton, Joe Mercer, Ted Sagar and Tommy G. Jones put the league title in the Goodison cabinet for seven years with six wins off the bat, all containing goals from Lawton.
Despite this record and their continued form, Derby climbed above the Blues in October and remained atop the table until February when a derby win at Anfield, with goals from Lawton and Stan Bentham, lifted Everton back to first place.
Everton's main problems came from a Wolves side who knocked them out of the FA Cup and then inflicted a 7-0 defeat in February.
But Everton did not lose again until the league was theirs, the title finally coming despite a 2-1 defeat at Charlton Athletic but combined with Wolves drawing at Bolton left them in an unassailable position.
Lawton ended as top-scorer with 34 goals. Torry Gillick and Alex Stevenson contributed well with 14 and 11 strikes respectively.
It was the war that prevented the Everton side from building on their success but the seven years they held the title were to be the last for 20 years.
