Columbus United, one of the oldest and most successful soccer clubs in Ohio, has become the first in the US to sign up as an affiliate of English Premier League side Everton Football Club.
Players have until Monday 25 May to register to be considered for Columbus teams for the 2020/21 season – and to benefit from being a part of the new relationship between Columbus and Everton.
Being a part of the Everton International Academy Affiliate Programme (EIAAP) provides Columbus United coaching staff and players of all ages with the benefit of year-round assistance and guidance from coaches at the world-renowned Everton Youth Academy, which produced England’s all-time record goalscorer Wayne Rooney.
Everton coaches will travel to Columbus to assist in implementing the Everton Academy curriculum and Columbus players and coaches will make annual visits to train at Everton’s state-of-the-art USM Finch Farm complex.
The EIAAP has structures in place to deliver its programme remotely during the coronavirus pandemic, via its digital platform which allows affiliates to access resources and maintain contact with Everton coaches.
The new affiliation also gives Columbus access to sporting and business best practice to improve sustainability and aid growth – a level of support that sets the EIAAP apart from more traditional football camp models.
Established in 1988 as a Men’s amateur team, Ohio’s Columbus United has expanded into youth soccer, offering competitive teams for both boys and girls - and now has more than 400 players across the club. The club has gone on to win a raft of trophies, State Championships and Regional Leagues, and established a reputation for developing high-class footballers.
Columbus’s new status marks the next phase in its ambition and growth – developments which will now be underpinned and supported by Everton.
To take advantage of this new opportunity, players are being advised to register now to be considered for Columbus teams for the 2020/21 season.
Players will be selected for Under 8 to under 18 teams for male and female players until Monday 25 May. Columbus United will reach out to applicants regarding a try-out opportunity after they register.

Simon Davis, Director of Coaching, Columbus United, said: “I am very proud and excited that Columbus United will be working so closely with Everton. This is a great opportunity for our players and coaches to reach the highest level of the game and will show them the path they need to follow to be able to keep pace with the top talent in England who are part of Everton’s Academy at USM Finch Farm. Everton is known all around the world and has always been one of the best clubs in England's top league, so it is a great honour to be partnering with them now in America. Our club has achieved so much already and now with this addition and exciting new relationship, our aspirations have risen to the next level.”
Joel Waldron, Everton’s Academy Director, said: “Columbus United shares a passion with Everton for developing quality footballers and helping them grow as people. I’m confident this partnership can help Columbus become even more successful in that goal. Working closely in collaboration with our Academy Programme, I’m excited to see the progress that will be made in the months and years ahead.”
Known by its passionate US fanbase as ‘America’s Team,’ Everton is one of the most followed Premier League clubs in the USA. As part of its international strategy, Everton has expanded its Official Supporters’ Club programme and now has more than 55 supporters’ clubs across the US – meaning there is at least one Everton supporters’ club in every city state in the US.
Everton has had a number of former US stars as part of their roster of the years, including Landon Donovan, Brian McBride, Joe Max-Moore and former USMNT goalkeeper Tim Howard, a legend of the Club from 2007-2016 and Everton’s record Premier League appearance holder. Howard is now Everton’s official Everton in the USA ambassador.
The Everton International Academy Affiliate Programme (EIAAP) is available to grassroots teams, professional sides, youth academies, girls’ and women’s teams, as well as colleges and universities.
