Billy Balmer signed for Everton from the South Shore in 1897 and he went on to make 331 appearances scoring one goal.

A tough-tackling full-back, he could operate effectively on either flank and on many occasions partnered his brother, Robert, in the Everton defence.

Liverpool-born Balmer represented England and he played in both the 1906 and 1907 FA Cup finals.

He left the club in 1908 signing for Southern League side, Croydon Common and he later signed for Chester in 1912 but only made two appearances before ending his playing career.
