Everton signed Tommy Johnson in March 1930 in a £6,000 deal from Manchester City as the board made a desperate last-ditch attempt to avoid relegation.

The inside-forward netted four goals in 10 games, but that still was not enough to keep Everton away from the drop and his real work began the following campaign in the Second Division.

Johnson struck an outstanding partnership with Dixie Dean up front, scoring 14 to help the Blues to promotion and then 22 to aid in the Blues’ title winning season of 1931/32.

He played a total of 161 times for the Blues, scoring 65 goals between 1930 and 1934, when he crossed Stanley Park to join Liverpool.

The prolific forward won five caps for England, three of which came whilst playing for Everton.
