Fleetwood joined the Blues from Rochdale in March 1911 and was known for his versatility – being able to operate at inside-forward, half-back as well as a centre-half and right-half.

His versatility proved to be extremely useful after the First World War as Fleetwood managed a total of 285 appearances for the club, scoring ten goals.

Despite a war-interrupted spell at Goodison, Fleetwood left the club with a League Championship medal from 1914/15 season.

He was never capped by England, however he did feature in two wartime internationals against Scotland in 1919.

Fleetwood left the club for Oldham in 1923 but would later return to the club as part of the coaching staff upon retirement.
