Goalkeeper Tommy Fern was signed by the Blues in December 1913 for a fee of £1,500 from Lincoln City after he had made 142 consecutive appearances for the Imps.

Fern was a daunting figure, who was signed to replace former Goodison favourite Billy Scott.

But his courage and bravery between the sticks often proved to be a hindrance as Fern missed a number of games through injury.

This, coupled with the interruption from World War I, restricted Fern to 231 appearances during a 10-year spell with the Toffees.

He did, however, leave Goodison with a League Championship medal after being an integral part of the 1914/15 title winning side.

Fern eventually left for Port Vale in 1924 as Alfie Harland became first choice goalkeeper for the Blues.
