Stan Bentham began his career at non-league Wigan Athletic after being turned down by Bolton Wanderers following a trial.

Everton signed the 18-year-old wing-half, who could also play as a forward, and he hit the ground running by scoring a brace on his debut to help the Blues to a 4-0 win over Grimsby Town.

He became a first-team regular and missed just one game in Everton’s title winning season of 1938/39, scoring nine goals in the process.

Unfortunately for Bentham, he was just 23 years old when Neville Chamberlain declared war on Germany in September 1939 and the league was subsequently suspended for the next seven years, meaning the Leigh-born man lost out on his prime years.

He scored a total of 17 goals in 125 appearances for the Toffees.
