Richard Wright was David Moyes' biggest summer signing in July 2002 in a deal worth £3.5 million, rising to £4.5 million on appearances.

Wright made his full first-team Ipswich debut on May 6, 1995 aged 17 against Coventry City. The 6ft 2in shot stopper kept a clean sheet that day and won over the Town coaching staff, who didn't hesitate in giving him more and more first-team exposure.

While at Ipswich, Wright's England career also blossomed, and he represented his country at youth, under-21, 'B' and senior levels. His first senior cap came against Malta in June 2000.

The Suffolk-born stopper had a glorious first season in the Premiership with Ipswich and was widely regarded as one of the country's top keepers, irrespective of his age. His prodigious talent was recognised by Arsene Wenger, who took him to Highbury in a £6million deal.

Richard made 22 appearances for Arsenal in the 2001/02 season, enough to win him a championship medal. However, despite playing in every round in the run up to the FA Cup final of 2002, Wenger preferred David Seaman for the showdown with Chelsea, helping Wright make the decision to look elsewhere for first-team football.

However, his 2003/04 season was a nightmare as he suffered a mysterious knee-injury which kept him out for the majority of the campaign.

The form of Nigel Martyn during the 2005/06 season kept Richard out of the side and the arrival of Tim Howard in the summer of 2006 meant he was once again a deputy.

The goalkeeper was not offered a new deal at the end of the 2006/07 season, paving the way for a free transfer to West Ham United.

Another unhappy spell at Upton Park led to a return to Ipswich in 2008 however, and he spent two seasons with his former club before being released.

A brief stint at Sheffield United followed but a second return to Portman Road materialised in 2011 after he impressed while using the club's facilities to train.
