Ramiro Funes Mori moved to Goodison Park in August 2015, joining Everton from Argentine giants River Plate on a five-year contract.

Everton paid a £9.5million fee to secure the left-footed central-back, who had helped his former club win the Copa Libertadores - the South American equivalent of Europe’s UEFA Champions League - less than a month before arriving in England.

Funes Mori made a total of 108 club appearances for River Plate, scoring a healthy return of 10 goals in that period.

Funes Mori is the second Argentinian player to represent Everton, following in the footsteps trod by forward Denis Stracqualursi who spent the 2011/12 season on loan with the Blues.

His first season brought 37 Club appearances in all competitions for the Blues, resulting him quickly forging the reputation amongst Evertonians as a blood-and-thunder central defender.

While defending, of course, is Funes Mori’s primary concern, his aerial prowess also pays dividends in an attacking sense.

He scored his first goal for the Blues against Bournemouth and bagged four more Club goals before heading off to the Copa America with Argentina in the summer of 2016.

He started every game during Argentina’s quest through to the final, where they were pipped to glory on penalties by Chile.

The defender was deployed as the left-sided centre-back - both in a pair and in a three-man defence - in his 26 outings for the Toffees in 2016/17. Funes Mori's season was brought to a premature end, however, when he suffered a serious knee injury while on international duty with his country in March 2017.

The injury would keep him out of first-team action for more than a year, the former River Plate man finally returning for the Blues when he came on as a substitute in the 1-1 draw at Swansea City on 4 April. He went on to feature in three further Premier League games and was named in Argentina's preliminary squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

In June 2018, Funes Mori joined Villarreal, penning a four-year deal with the La Liga club until June 2022.
