After leaving Newcastle United’s youth set-up, attacker Peter Beardsley broke through at Carlisle United. In 1982 he took in a two spells in Canada with the Vancouver Whitecaps, sandwiching a unsuccessful stint at Manchester United.

In 1983 he returned to Newcastle and his goal-laden four year spell as a Magpie prompted Liverpool to snap him up. By that time he was an England international and he spent another four seasons at Anfield.

The arrival of Dead Saunders prompted his departure and he swapped red for blue when joining Everton in 1991 for £1million.

After 32 goals in 95 appearances for the Blues – including becoming one of only three players to score for both clubs in a Merseyside derby – he left for a return to Newcastle in 1993.

Beardsley enjoyed huge success back at his boyhood club alongside Andy Cole, coming within a whisker of the Premier League title.

Leaving United in 1997 for Bolton, he enjoyed short spells at Manchester City, Fulham, Hartlepool before ending his career in 1999 with a couple of appearances for Australian side Melbourne Knights.

After his playing career he has held both coaching and media roles at Newcastle and is now involved with the younger age groups.
