David Moyes swooped to sign England international Nigel Martyn on transfer deadline day in September 2003, to increase competition among the 'keepers at Goodison.

He became the country's first £1million goalkeeper when he joined Crystal Palace from Bristol Rovers in 1989, having made over 100 appearances for the West Country side.

Leeds beat off competition from Everton to land the 'keeper for £2.25million in the summer of 1996 - then a record for a goalkeeper.

His form continued to be a model of consistency and was a major factor in Leeds' third place finish in the Premiership, Champions League spot and the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in the 1999/2000 season.

However, after a public disagreement with Terry Venables in the summer of 2002, Nigel found first-team appearances limited and spent the 2002/03 campaign on the sidelines in the shadows of Paul Robinson.

With over 500 league appearances and 23 international caps to his credit, Martyn was an ideal replacement for the injured Richard Wright and with his great performances between the sticks won Everton's Player of the Year Award for the 2003/04 season.

He maintained his position as the side's number one choice during the 2004/05 campaign and signed a new one year deal at the end of that season.

He continued to be a virtual ever-present during the first half of the season but a series of ankle problems sidelined him from January onwards, providing Richard Wright with the opportunity to return to the side.

Martyn did not feature again for Everton and announced his retirement from football in June 2006.
