Bolton-born Norman Greenhalgh was a left-back for Everton either side of World War II.

The defender was released by his hometown club but went on to earn a move to the Football League with Everton after impressing at New Brighton.

Poetically, he made his debut against the club who refused him as a youth player as the Blues thumped Bolton Wanderers 4-1 at Goodison.

Greenhalgh was an ever-present in the Championship winning side in 1938/39 – playing all 42 games and scoring his only goal in an Everton shirt as the Toffees sailed towards the title.

He made 115 appearances for the club before leaving for Bangor City in 1949.

As he had already appeared in the Football League before the league’s suspension as a result of World War II, Greenhalgh was selected for England for the wartime international against Scotland in December 1939.
