Stats
Former Wales international striker Mark Hughes joined Everton during the twilight of his 22-year playing career.

‘Sparky’ signed on at Goodison Park as a 36-year-old in March 2000 and made nine appearances at the tail end of the campaign, scoring one goal in a 4-2 home victory over Watford.

He played a further nine games for the Blues at the start of the 2000/01 season but soon transferred to Blackburn Rovers – his final club in a glittering playing career.

Hughes spent the majority of his playing days with Manchester United where he won the Premier League title twice (1992/93 and 1993/94), along with the FA Cup three times (1984/85, 1989/90 and 1993/94), the League Cup in 1991/92 and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1990/91.

Sandwiched in between his two spells at Old Trafford were short stints at Barcelona and Bayern Munich. He later joined Chelsea where he won the FA Cup for a fourth time in 1996/97.

He only spent three years at Stamford Bridge but it was trophy-laden – the West Londoners triumphed in the League Cup and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1997/98.

Hughes later signed for Southampton before transferring to Everton and Blackburn.

At international level, he won 72 caps between 1984 and 1999, scoring 16 times.

Hughes’ first venture into management was with Wales where he was in charge for five years up until 2004.

He then took up the top job at Blackburn and later managed Manchester City, Fulham, Queens Park Rangers and, most recently, Stoke City.
