One of Walter Smith's final signings, Lee Carsley arrived from Coventry in February 2002 for £1.9m and his whole-hearted approach to life in the midfield engine room made him a valuable member of the squad.

The Republic of Ireland international played a big part during the 2004/05 season, when he made more first team appearances than any other member of the Blues' squad in a season that saw Everton march towards a fourth place finish and qualification for the Champions League.

All Evertonians will remember ‘Super Lee Carsley’ for his winner in the derby against Liverpool at Goodison in December 2004 in the 200th Merseyside derby – a goal which sealed the Club's goal of the season award.

Four minutes from the end of the 04–05 season, during a game against Bolton, Carsley was stretchered off with a twisted knee. He was fit to resume pre-season training but was injured again at the start of the 2005–06 campaign in a pre-season friendly away to Fenerbahçe S.K. ruling him out for a further 5 months.

His contract with Everton expired in 2008 and he opted to move back to his native Midlands, signing for Birmingham City.

He spent two seasons at Birmingham and another at Coventry before hanging up his boots in the summer of 2011.
