‘Jock’ was a six-foot tall, ferocious tackler with an eye for attacking ventures up the field.

Signed in March 1930 from Dundee, the left-half was drafted in an attempt to try and steer the Blues away from relegation.

However it proved to be a case of too little, too late as Everton were relegated to the Second Division that season after finishing bottom of the league.

Despite the disappointing start to life at Goodison, Thomson went on to star in all of Everton’s successes up until the outbreak of World War II.

Everton bounced straight back up to the top flight the very next season – a campaign during which Thomson missed just one game.

The season after, in 1931/32, the Toffees stormed to the Division One title and Thomson again played a key role in the success.

He also left Goodison with an FA Cup winners medal after being part of the side that overcame Manchester City 3-0 in the 1933 final at Wembley.

The Fife-born wing-half made only one international appearance in Scotland’s 5-2 win over Wales – a game which was played shortly after Everton’s 1932 title win.

He retired from playing in 1938 after five goals in 296 appearances for the club and later had a brief spell as manager of Manchester City.
