Profile
Stats

Standing at only five feet five inches tall, Johnny Holt was a centre half who was dubbed the “Little Everton Devil” by Blues fans. Holt was signed from local rivals Bootle in August 1888 and he would stay with Everton for 10 years making 252 league and cup appearances for the Club before moving on to Reading.

Given his diminutive stature, Holt would resort to unorthodox methods in order to outwit opposing forwards and he specialized in niggly little fouls which would go unnoticed by referees. He was a terrific jumper, using his solid physique to great advantage and also an expert when it came to one-on-one situations, perfecting the art of the last minute tackle.

During his time at Everton, Holt won a League Championship medal in 1890/91 and two FA Cup runners-up medals in 1893 and 1897. He also won nine England caps whilst at Goodison and had the honour of becoming the first Everton player ever to play for England when they took on Wales at Wrexham.
