John Hurst emerged through Everton’s academy to sign his first professional contract in October 1964.

He made history in August 1965 when he became the Club’s first ever substitute, stepping off the bench to make his debut against Stoke City.

The defender became a regular starter at the beginning of the 1967/68 season and would only ever miss an occasional game through injury from then on.

Confusingly for a defender, Hurst often wore the number 10 jersey, and was an unsung hero of an Everton side filled with headline-makers.

He was an ever-present in the championship-winning team of 1969/70 and, in total, scored 34 goals in 402 games for the Blues before leaving for Oldham Athletic in June 1976.
