After beginning his career at non-league level, second division Woolwich Arsenal took a gamble on Coleman in 1902 and the forward became an instant hit with the fans.

His performances and goal tally soon caught the eye of Everton, who took advantage of Arsenal Woolwich’s financial difficulties to secure the forward’s services for a fee of £700 in February 1908.

The Kettering-born goalscorer stayed at Goodison Park for two-and-a-half years, netting 30 goals in 71 games for the Toffees.

Coleman is remembered for being one of the few players to maintain their membership of the Players’ Union, which would later become the Professional Footballers’ Association, in defiance of the FA, who later backed down after a stand-off.
