John Bailey joined his hometown club of Everton from Blackburn Rovers in July 1979 for £300,000.

After an initial spell in the first-team following his move, appearances were restricted for Bailey in the 1981/82 campaign. But he managed to catch the eye of new manager Howard Kendall and eventually won his place back in the side in 1982/83, helping the Toffees maintain their progress under Kendall with a second consecutive top 10 finish.

The full-back played in the side that won the FA Cup in 1984 and he was also part of the Championship winning side in 1984/85. an effervescent and popular figure in the dressing room, Bailey was an honest and hard-working player on the pitch.

During his career with the Blues he made 220 appearances for Everton, scoring three times but the arrival of Pat van den Hauwe ultimately cost him his place in the team and he eventually moved to Newcastle United in October 1985.
