Ian Snodin endeared himself to fans when he turned down Liverpool before signing for the Blues in early 1987.

Bought as a tough-tackling midfielder, the England U21 player proved to have made the right decision as he proved an important addition to a squad that was to go on an seal the league title.

His versatility was to prove a key factor in the title run-in but it also prevented him establishing himself as a first-team regular before a defensive switch, in part due to injury to skipper Kevin Ratcliffe, saw him impress in 1988/89 first at centre-half, and then at right-back.

His good form earned him an England call in early 1989, but weeks later he picked up what appeared to be a hamstring problem, ruling him out for much of the next three-and-a-half years.

Snodin made 190 appearances for Everton, scoring seven times before moving on to Oldham Athletic in 1994.
