Stats

Hunter Hart was a no-nonsense defender signed from Airdrieonians for £4,000 in January 1922 and went straight into a faltering Everton side.

Hart made an impression in a tough first season at Goodison and was handed the captain’s armband for his second season.

He continued in his role as club captain for six seasons in total and, during that time, the Blues’ performances on the pitch began to steadily improve.

His loyalty was rewarded with a League Championship winners medal in 1927/28 – a phenomenal season in which Dixie Dean swept away everyone in his path to notch 60 goals.

Hart’s achievements were all the more remarkable given that he had lost an eye in an accident as a child.

He retired in 1930 after 301 games, scoring five goals and later returned to the club as a coach.
