The man christened ‘Diamond’ by Evertonians arrived at Goodison Park from first club Chelsea, with whom he had earned five caps with England’s Under-21s.

Whilst a Toffee he helped the Blues progress to the 1995 FA Cup final and it was his shot off the bar that Paul Rideout nodded in to seal a 1-0 victory against Manchester United.

Arguably his most important contribution to the Everton cause, however, was a brace in the must-win final game of the 1993/4 campaign against Wimbledon. With the Toffees staring a relegation from the top division in the face, Stuart scored twice to help preserve the Club’s place in English football’s top table.

He left Goodison in 1997, having scored 31 goals in 162 appearances. He moved to Sheffield United, spending a couple of years at Bramall Lane before moving on to Charlton Athletic.

A short spell at Norwich brought the curtain down on his career at the age of 34. Stuart moved into the media before returning to Goodison in the role as a Club Ambassador.
