Having broken through at Leeds, Gary Speed enjoyed First Division title success and European football while at Elland Road.

A boyhood Evertonian, Speed had little hesitation in joining the Blues in 1996 when Joe Royle came calling and £3.5million took him to Goodison Park.

He is fondly remembered for scoring a hat-trick in the 7-1 win over Southampton in the 1996/97 campaign, which still remains Everton’s joint record win, and he was later voted Player of the Year for that season.

Named club captain by Howard Kendall, Speed went on to make 65 appearances, scoring 18 goals, in his 18-month spell with the Blues.

In February 1998, Kenny Dalglish parted with £5.5million to take him to Newcastle. He then had spells at Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield United, before becoming coach then manager at Bramall Lane.

Speed also managed Wales, for whom he earned 85 caps a player, before tragically taking his own life in November 2011.

He remains one of only a few players to have played over 500 Premier League games.
